WORCESTER FEAST Community Chef of the Year 2009
Britain’s top chefs seem to enjoy the same celebrity status as pop stars and actors these days, thanks to shows like Celebrity Hell’s Kitchen and Masterchef.
Worcester Feast, Worcester’s first major food and drink festival, believes it is time to recognise the chefs in our region who are hard at work, 365 days a year, out of the glare of the spotlight – Worcestershire’s Community Chefs.
Together with Worcester News, Worcester Feast is aiming to find a chef who cooks for one of the following types of organisations in the county:
- hospitals and hospices
- schools, colleges, universities
- care homes, meals on wheels
- council offices
So if you know anyone you think fits the bill, you can nominate them via the Contact Us tab at the top of this page, fill in your name, email address and type “Community Chef” in the Subject line, then simply click on the send e mail button at the bottom of the page.
When we receive your e mail we will send you a short form to fill in to register your nomination for the Worcester Feast Community Chef 2009.
When all the Chef nominations are in, a shortlist of three will be chosen. The finalists will then be invited to a cook off to be judged by a panel of professionals including catering specialists. The ultimate winner will then have their own slot at the Worcester Feast Cookery Theatre to demonstrate their skills.
The competition will also help to raise money for Acorns Children’s Hospice in Worcester whose chef, Martyn Barber, will be one of the judges. He knows more than most about cooking for a very special group of people. Commenting on his role, Martyn Barber, said:
“Many of the children we cook for have to take their food as a puree. We have to find ways to make it appealing whilst also taking dietary and multi-faith needs into account too. We try to do as many special things as possible with BBQs, birthday parties and even through simple things like considering the aroma and texture of our food”.
“It’s also important to me to support local suppliers and I buy as much of my food as I can within Worcestershire."
"I think the Community Chef Award is a great way to recognise people for whom cooking is the be-all and end-all – not a platform to become a superstar”.
